Sleeping Bear Dunes
Those of us from Northern Michigan know we are blessed to be home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Not only are the dunes a spectacular part of our state, but they are also critical for our local economy, attracting thousands of tourists each year, contributing millions to local businesses, and supporting 2,000 jobs. In fact, the dunes were even voted the “Most Beautiful Place in America.”
In order to ensure future generations can enjoy Sleeping Bear Dunes, I wrote important legislation that would protect access to nearly 33,000 acres along the lakeshore. On March 3, 2014, this legislation was passed by both houses of Congress.
This legislation was developed the right way—not by guys in Washington, but by local residents in Leelanau and Benzie counties. It will protect access to the lakeshore, while also specifically protecting the right to hunt and fish in designated areas.
The passage of this bill is a big win for Sleeping Bear Dunes and all of Northern Michigan. After 12 years of hard work and input by local residents in Leelanau and Benzie Counties, access to the park is now set to be protected forever. It has been an honor to shepherd this bill through Congress and I couldn’t be happier with getting it across the finish line.
Being a lifelong resident of Northern Michigan, I know how important it is to protect our area’s natural wonders. With this legislation I have authored, we can ensure our children and grandchildren will forever be able to enjoy the splendor of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
