RESIDENT COMMISSIONER PEDRO PIERLUSI ANNOUNCES THE ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS

WASHINGTON, DC- Resident Commissioner in Washington, Pedro Pierluisi, invites high school students to participate in the 2010 Congressional Art Competition of the United States. This annual competition, known as "An Artistic Discovery," seeks to recognize the artistic talent of young high school students in Puerto Rico, the states and other territories.

Since 1982 the House of Representatives of the United States has sponsored this art competition to highlight the artistic talent of American students and emphasize the positive impact of the study and practice of the arts among our youth.

The resident commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, like all members of the Federal House of Representatives, may choose a piece of art in their district from those submitted by their young constituents. The winning piece will be part of an exhibition at the Federal U.S. Capitol in Washington DC and it will also compete among others submitted for an annual college scholarship at the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design located in Savannah, Georgia.

Artworks will be evaluated within the following categories: paintings, drawings, collages (must be two dimensional), prints, mixed media, computer art and photography. The piece must measure no more than 28" height, 28" wide and 4" deep including the frame and artwork cannot weigh more than 15 lbs.

The local winner will have the opportunity to travel to Washington DC, meet the Resident Commissioner and attend an event in Congress with all the winners of the nation.

The deadline to submit the application for participation is Friday, April 30, 2010 and for the delivery of the piece to the office of the Resident Commissioner in San Juan is from May 10-14, 2010.
