Press Release

Washington, DC—Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi issued the following statement regarding yesterday’s passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of H.R. 5278, the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA).  The final vote tally was 297 to 127:

“Last night’s strong bipartisan vote in support of PROMESA was the result of months of meticulous work by many in Congress, in the executive branch, and outside of government who want to help the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico have the bright and prosperous future they deserve.  Yesterday, we witnessed a sharply divided Congress set partisanship aside to do the difficult but correct thing.  That vote, and the process that led to it, should renew our faith in the ability of government—when guided by strong, pragmatic and effective leaders—to solve difficult policy and political problems in a way that promotes the public interest.”

“PROMESA now moves to the Senate.  I respect that the Senate has its own internal processes and dynamics.  I will continue my efforts to explain why I believe passage of PROMESA is so vital.”
