Washington D.C. - Congressman John L. Mica's update on Repurposing the Lake Baldwin VA Medical Center.

Although the VA planned to close the Lake Baldwin VA facility after the opening of the Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona, I fought the decision and worked with the VA until they granted my request.

Since that decision, the Lake Baldwin VA Medical Center, a former Naval Hospital, has remained in use and has kept open its pharmacy and clinic. The Lake Baldwin facility has continued to provide specialty services for our veterans and we are looking at areas to expand treatment, like mental health and surgeries.

After two years of being vacant, I was pleased to join VA officials in August, 2016 to reopen the Lake Baldwin Domiciliary. The domiciliary supports my “No Veteran Left Behind” initiative and provides our homeless veterans and those needing longer term care, dealing with addiction, mental or serious health issues with increased services.

Lastly, in February, 2016 Congress enacted legislation I authored to transfer the Lake Baldwin VA Nursing Home to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs (FDVA) from the federal VA. I am now working with state officials to open this 120 bed long term care unit as soon as possible.
