Press Release

Award recognizes contributions to emergency medicine through actions, dedication, deeds

HENDERSON - Last night Congressman Joe Heck (NV-03) received the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physician's (ACOEP) Bruce D. Horton Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, presented during the kick-off of the ACOEP's 2014 Scientific Assembly, recognizes an osteopathic emergency physician who "made contributions to the College and/or emergency medicine through his or her actions, dedication and deeds over his or her career."

Congressman Heck received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.) from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988, and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1992. Following his residency, Heck worked in the emergency medicine departments of Sunrise Hospital and University Medical Center, both in Las Vegas.

"I'm humbled and honored to receive the Bruce D. Horton Lifetime Achievement Award," Rep. Heck said. "This award is a great testament to the many exceptional physicians I have learned from and worked with over the course of my career in emergency medicine. As emergency medicine physicians we pride ourselves on providing care to all who come into our department regardless of chief complaint or ability to pay and I am proud to have been recognized for my service to the profession of emergency medicine and the College."

In addition to his work in the emergency department, Rep. Heck has worked in emergency medicine as an ambulance attendant and EMT, search and rescue team member, and tactical physician with local and federal law enforcement. He has had academic work published on the topic of emergency preparedness and response.
