WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) issued the following statement today after the U.S. International Trade Commission reached a decision in the case he testified in, which was brought by American tire manufacturers who alleged unfair and illegal trade subsidies by Chinese producers. The Commission agreed that U.S. industry has been “materially injured,” and as a result the Commerce Department will be ordering antidumping duties:

“The International Trade Commission’s decision to impose relief from illegal Chinese tire imports is good news for Alabama workers. The ITC had already found that China was improperly subsidizing tire production in the past, but when that relief expired those unfair practices resumed and American workers suffered. The day is past when the United States can stand to see a single additional job lost due to unfair practices by our trading partners.”

BACKGROUND:

Last month, Sen. Sessions attended the ITC hearing on this case and delivered testimony in support of the American tire companies’ petition. Alabama is home to a number of tire manufacturing facilities, including Michelin plants in Dothan and Tuscaloosa and a Goodyear plant in Gadsden. The ITC plans to make its final report public by August 24, 2015; when available, it may be accessed here.
