Senator Enzi and Thermopolis youth share common thread
Washington D.C.- U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., recently congratulated 12 year old Laurel Leonhardt of Thermopolis, a member of the Hot Springs County 4-H and a sixth grader at the Senator's own alma mature Thermopolis Middle School May 8, 2007. Upon meeting the two realized that they share more than attending the same grade school but also a unique ability, quilting.
Leonhardt was selected among thousands of applicants to receive the Prudential Spirit of Community Award which is given to young people from across the country each year for exemplary volunteer service. Leonhardt's community project self titled "Homemade Hugs" involves Leonhardt hand making quilts which she gives to law enforcement officers in her town to keep in their patrol cars for anyone in need of a 'hug'.
Enzi explained to Leonhardt, who has been sewing since age five, that he also taught how to quilt when he was young by his grandmother and mother. Leonhardt has made 12 quilts already since starting the project.
In addition to receiving a personal congratulations from Indianapolis Colts quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning at the 12th annual award ceremony, Leonhardt also received $1,000. When asked if she planned on using the money for college Leonhardt responded that she had other intentions for the funds a "Volkswagen Bug."
