Transportation

Keeping West Texas accessible and safe.

Transportation systems have long been the vital arteries of commerce and economic activity here in America.  Most recently, the interstate highway system in the United States has been a notable catalyst for expansion and economic development – especially for rural areas like West Texas and the Big Country.

Road transportation is particularly critical in the 19th District.  Energy and agricultural producers rely on safe, efficient transportation to move their products to the market.  That’s why I’m the co-chair of the Congressional Ports-to-Plains Caucus.  The Caucus is an informal group of Members dedicated to pursuing sound rural transportation policy and educating other Representatives about the importance of the Ports-to-Plains Corridor, which runs from Alberta, Canada all the way down to the ports of Texas.  It is one of the most crucial transportation corridors in the country, and it’s critical that we support strong policies that encourage greater connectivity to rural America.

Americans also deserve a safe and efficient air space. Modern business and personal travel has evolved and distant parts of the country and world are now only a flight away.  I’m proud to represent the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport and the Abilene Regional Airport, which serve thousands of passengers and general aviators throughout the West Texas region.

If you work in agriculture, you know that a lot of modern equipment like combines, planters, and harvesters have fuel tanks that can hold 250 gallons or more. But current government regulations prevent agricultural employees from transporting more than 118 gallons at a time. That means that during the busiest times of year, producers are forced to make multiple trips to the fuel station just to fill up their equipment. That adds time and money that they can’t afford.

The Water Resources Reform and Development Act stimulates our economy, promotes trade, and boosts competitiveness.  It invests in America’s water infrastructure while cutting red tape and deauthorizing billions of dollars of unnecessary and backlogged projects.  This bill contains no earmarks and limits costly federal reviews, saving tax dollars while partnering with local communities to maintain our ports and waterways.
