Defense and National Security
I believe a strong, well-funded military is crucial to ensuring the protection of the United States and freedom throughout the world. Combatting terrorism, protecting our nation from future attacks and ensuring the safety of all Americans must always remain a national priority. As a former VA surgeon, the father of an Afghanistan veteran, and a member of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, I have a deep, personal appreciation for the contributions of our United States military personnel.
Having visited our troops in Afghanistan, I have seen firsthand the sacrifices and efforts our troops are making. I am pleased that our troops are returning home and supported ending our direct engagement in that country, but recognize that the United States and its allies must be ready to combat threats from hostile regimes throughout the world. Given our current fiscal situation, we must scrutinize how we are spending all taxpayer money even as it relates to national defense, but I don’t support arbitrary cuts. We must also work to ensure foreign aid is going to our allies and causes that are the most worthy.
