The abuse of and addiction to opioid drugs such as prescription pain relievers and heroine is a growing national problem. According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
, more people died from opioid drug overdoses in the United States in 2014 than during any previous year on record. Specifically, opioids were involved in 28,647 deaths that year, or 61% of all drug overdose deaths.
Which steps should the Federal government take to reduce opioid abuse, addiction, and overdose? Please select all that apply.
Require electronic health records and a national database to help doctors identify and prevent drug abuse and addiction.
Increase funding for research in non-narcotic medication and behavioral treatments.
Require primary care physicians, medical specialists, mental health providers, pharmacies, emergency departments, clinics and patients to undergo continuing opioid education.
Expand access and use of naloxone - an antidote to reverse opioid overdose.
The federal government should not be involved. Reducing opioid abuse, addiction, and overdose should be led by state officials in partnership with the health care industry, educators, law enforcement, and others in the local community.
