Health

As a lawmaker and a physician, health care issues are very important to me. We face a variety of challenges when it comes to increasing access to quality, affordable medical care and ensuring that those who want to buy health insurance can do so. Increasing access to care means more than giving individuals access to health insurance. Access to care means ensuring medical residency programs are adequately funded so we can address doctor shortages and that seniors are able to see their preferred healthcare practitioner. Protecting Medicare for current seniors like my parents and preserving it for future generations will continue to be a focus of mine in Congress.

The United States has more Noble Prize winners in medicine than any other country and the 21st Century Cures Act will ensure we maintain our nation’s leadership role in discovering the cutting-edge, novel therapies and treatments of the future. IN THE NEWS -- Rep. Heck Opinion via The Hill - A missed opportunity to fix the SGR

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed another one-year funding patch for the formula that calculates Medicare reimbursement rates for doctors, which was set to expire at the end of March. Another temporary fix of the SGR formula does nothing to secure permanent access to care for our seniors and does not remove the cloud of uncertainty hanging over healthcare practitioners.  Read more here.
