Education • Leadership • Public Service

The United States Senate Youth Program, established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. The 55th annual program will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 4 – 11, 2017. Two student leaders from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education Activity will spend a week in Washington experiencing their national government in action. Student delegates will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, as well as participate in a meeting with a justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. All transportation, hotel and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundations. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science. Photo of the Week

Politics and public policy are a daily focus during the United States Senate Youth Program’s Washington Week. But the program also stresses the importance of appreciation of the arts and the key role of the public sector in supporting the arts in a flourishing society. A visit to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to take in a concert by the National Symphony Orchestra has often been part of the Washington Week experience, as have visits to the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. As President Kennedy declared in the year that the USSYP was founded, “I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit.” (© Photo by Jakub Mosur and Erin Lubin).
