Reid Statement on Native American Heritage Month

Washington, D.C – Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement in recognition of Native American Heritage Month:

“This Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate our First Americans – their grit, diversity and courage has made us a better nation. They have inspired countless individuals, and their contributions have enriched us all. As home to 27 of the 567 federally recognized Indian tribes, Nevada has benefited immensely from their rich heritage and fierce advocacy for protecting our state’s breathtaking landscapes and  rugged wilderness.

“Before the Silver State was settled by pioneers, prospectors, and entrepreneurs, Nevada was home for generations to the Washoe, Western Shoshone, and Paiute people. Without the American Indian tribes that still call the Great Basin their home, Nevada would not be the resilient and vibrant state it is today. Despite suffering through endless injustices and discrimination, the Native American community’s love for the Silver State and the country never wavered. We too must never waver in our solemn obligations to the First People.

“I have worked hard with Nevada tribes so that they too can build a bright future for themselves and their families. With their help, we were able to pass the bipartisan Nevada Native Nations Land Act into law this year, which transfers more than 71,000 acres of land administered by the federal government to six of Nevada’s federally recognized tribes. This act serves as an important step in righting the wrongs of the past and helping tribes restore their homelands.

“Native Americans have forged ahead through heartbreaking challenges and refused to be knocked down. We have a duty to honor their legacy and strengthen the trust between our governments. This November, we must recommit to ensuring the Native American community and all future generations have the opportunity to lead lives full of promise and success.”
