FITZHUGH, Lafayette H., a Doorkeeper from Texas; born in Caroline County, Va., May 9, 1829; served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War; served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; sergeant-at-arms, Confederate senate, 1862–1865; elected Doorkeeper of the United States House of Representatives for the Forty-fourth Congress and served until his dismissal on May 22, 1876 (December 6, 1875–May 22, 1876); died on August 1, 1905, in St. Louis, Mo.; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Dallas, Tex.
