Grayson: SCOTUS Decision Important Step in Equality

Representative Applauds DOMA Ruling

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) applauded today’s Supreme Court’s decision, which struck down the core of the s-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The Court stated that DOMA’s Section 3, which denied legally married same-sex couples the federal protections and responsibilities conferred by marriage, violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision is a victory for all Americans, and brings our nation one step closer to the promise of equality and justice for all,” Grayson said. “The DOMA decision ensures that married gay and lesbian couples are recognized by the federal government, and that their families receive equal treatment in the eyes of the law. There should be no more discrimination based on where you’re from, what you look like, or who you love. Today’s DOMA decision is a historic step in the fight for equality. The federal government must ensure that no one is degraded or demeaned by the law, and that all couples receive the legal recognition and respect that they deserve.”

The Supreme Court also issued a procedural ruling in the Proposition 8 case. The result of the Court’s ruling is that same-sex marriages will continue in the state of California. California joins ten other states and the District of Columbia in permitting same-sex marriage or civil unions.

Congressman Alan Grayson represents Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, as well as parts of Orange and Polk counties. He previously served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th Congressional District in the 111th Congress.
