President’s Proposal Will Cut Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustments

Grayson: President’s Budget Breaks Promise to Seniors

President’s Proposal Will Cut Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustments

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) reacted today to the President’s budget proposal, which alters the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security benefits.

The proposed new way to calculate COLA results in a benefit cut for seniors, who rely on Social Security in their retirement. Congressman Grayson said he was deeply troubled by the President’s proposal.

“When it comes to Social Security benefits for our seniors, we made a promise and we should keep it,”Grayson said. “This is not entitlement reform—it is promise reform. Using the chained CPI breaks a fundamental promise that we have made. There are ways to strengthen Social Security. We can talk about eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse. We can talk about raising the cap, beyond which the rich pay no Social Security taxes. We can do all of these things without breaking our promise.”

Grayson will not support any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits. He recently wrote a letter to President Obama stating that he will vote against these benefit cuts. The letter now has the support of thirty Members of Congress.

Congressman Alan Grayson represents Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, as well as parts of Orange and Polk counties. He previously served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th Congressional District in the 111th Congress.
