TOMORROW: Rep. Grayson to Honor 20th Anniversary of Family Medical Leave Act

Supporters to Highlight Benefits of FMLA and Call for its Expansion

WHAT: Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) will lead a press conference commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), highlighting its benefits, and calling for an expansion of the FMLA.

WHEN: TOMORROW, August 6th at 11:00 a.m.

WHO:

  • Congressman Alan Grayson
  • Parents, workers, and individuals who have benefitted from the FMLA

WHERE: Orange County Administration Building - 201 S. Rosalind Street, Orlando, FL 32801

DETAILS: The FMLA offers twelve weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave, allowing hardworking Americans to care for a new baby, assist a sick loved-one, or recover from illness. Prior to the FMLA, workers could lose their jobs for taking time off to deal with a medical emergency, or to care for a sick family member. Pregnant women had no federal job security if they needed to take maternity leave following the birth of a child.

Since its implementation in 1993 the FMLA has been used more than 100 million times. Unfortunately many Americans cannot afford to take unpaid leave. Tomorrow’s press conference will also address extending paid leave under the FMLA, in order to ensure that every hardworking American can take advantage of the Act’s protections.

Congressman Alan Grayson represents Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, as well as parts of Orange and Polk counties. He previously served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th Congressional District in the 111th Congress.
