Members of the Congressional Western Caucus joined together Wednesday, December 12, 2012 to unanimously name Congressman Steve Pearce (R-NM) and Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) Co-Chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus for the 113th Congress. In addition, former Western Caucus Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) was named Chairman Emeritus, and Congressman Cory Gardner, Congressman Paul Gosar, and Congresswoman Kristi Noem were named Vice Chairman for the upcoming Congress. In addition to announcing the new caucus leadership, Executive Director, Jason Heffley, announced his departure from the caucus after two successful years at the helm. The caucus named Pete Obermueller from the office of Rep. Lummis Executive Director for the 113th Congress.

On Monday the U.S. House of Representatives announced committee assignments for the 113th Congress. U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo), will be returning to a post on the House Natural Resources Committee following a two year absence, as well as receiving two new appointments on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology. The decision by her House colleagues on committee placement by reflects Rep. Lummis’ strong advocacy to serve in positions of significance to Wyoming.

In a vote of 222 to 205 the U.S. House reauthorized the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The authorization provides federal funding to programs and organizations that provide assistance to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault. VAWA grants, provided through the Department of Justice along with the Department of Health and Human Services, established such outreach programs as the National Domestic Violence Hotline and other outreach programs aimed at the education and prevention of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. Today’s passage also increases the mandatory penalty for forcible rape to 10 years.
