Our nation is facing a serious fiscal crisis.  In recent years, we’ve witnessed federal spending reach new highs with an ever growing deficit and an unsustainable national debt.  The top priorities of the new Republican Congress are creating jobs and ending out-of-control Washington spending.

I am pleased the Bush-era tax relief has been extended for 2 years.  During a fragile economic recovery, we do not need to raise taxes on our famers, ranchers and small business owners.  These tax extensions are critical to helping our economy recover and promoting U.S. job creation.

Expanding export opportunities for Southwest Louisiana farmers is a top priority.  As American farmers continue to produce the safest, most secure food in the world, I am confident we can grow our agriculture exports and increase our global market share.  Agriculture is Louisiana’s leading export with over $13 billion in total exports in 2009.

It is important Congress works to implement all of the outstanding free trade agreements.  Implementation of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) has substantially helped our rural farmers gain market share in Latin America.  The U.S.-Columbia Trade Promotion Agreement has great potential for Southwest Louisiana rice farmers.  If this agreement becomes law, U.S. rice exports to Columbia could reach over $200 million annually.  Currently, U.S. rice faces a 189% tariff as it enters Columbia - this agreement would remove this barrier.

I appreciate the need to protect certain domestic industries from unfair global trade practices, but refusing to pass an agreement that would promote U.S. exports and American jobs is irresponsible.  Leveling the playing field and opening up new markets is exactly the support our farmers and ranchers deserve from Washington.

During the 112th Congress, Congress will also start work on a new farm bill.  We continue to face serious budgetary issues that must be addressed in a responsible manner.  I am committed to helping our rural communities and working with my colleagues to craft a responsible bill that supports and promotes the agriculture industry.

There is much work to be done to maintain a strong and vibrant farming community in Southwest Louisiana and I look forward to meeting this challenge.

I am always eager to hear from my constituents.  If you would like to speak with my staff about agriculture legislation, please contact my Washington, D.C. office at 202-225-2031.
