    Reed Celebrates Groundbreaking of WaterFire Arts Center

    Senator Reed joined state and community leaders and officials from WaterFire Providence at the groundbreaking for the new WaterFire Arts Center in Providence.  The center is located in a historic industrial building and will serve as WaterFire’s first permanent home in the community, consolidating all staff and operations in one location.  Senator Reed helped secure $600,000 in federal Brownfields cleanup grants to help WaterFire Providence safely redevelop the former Uniroyal U.S. Rubber Plant site.  When it is completed, the new center will also serve as a multi-use arts venue to host various events, exhibitions, and performances and will include a visitor’s center where people can learn about WaterFire and the River Relocation Project.

    Reed Helps Open New Career-Focused Training Programs

    Senator Reed joined state and community leaders at the grand opening of the new Marine Trades, Shipfitting and Welding Program at the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center (WACTC).  The new training being offered will build on the Warwick Marine Trades Career and Technical Education (CTE) program and will provide additional occupation-specific training to help students transition from school to career and/or post-secondary education.  The event also showcased five new, state-of-the-art welding booths paid for with local, state, and federal funds to help students train for various careers.  A member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Reed has worked for years to support employment training programs in Rhode Island, and has been instrumental in delivering funds for programs such as Real Jobs RI, a demand-driven initiative that puts employers at the center of the state's workforce development efforts.

    Reed Tours Restoration Efforts at Narrow River Estuary

    Senator Reed joined representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Nature Conservancy, and the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council on a boat tour of a saltmarsh restoration project in the Narrow River estuary at the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge in Narragansett.  In an effort to protect the marsh from rising sea levels and restore and strengthen saltmarsh habitats in the area, the marsh is currently being elevated by a process called thin-layer deposition, whereby material dredged from designated areas is placed on the existing marsh.  As the former Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior & Environment in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Senator Reed helped secure $1.4 million for the project as part of a $787 million recovery effort to help coastal wetlands, marshes, and similar locations in Rhode Island and nationwide recover from the damage caused by the hurricane and prepare for the impact of future storms and climate change.

    Senator Reed traveled to Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, and other nations in the Middle East at the end of October to get a firsthand look at security and political developments in the region and their impact on counter-terrorism operations and America’s national security.  During the trip, Reed met with heads of state, high-ranking foreign leaders, diplomats, and American military commanders, civilian personnel, as well as service members from Rhode Island who are currently serving overseas.

    Senator Reed visited UPS drivers at Warwick Industrial Park before their shifts and presented 26 new drivers with certificates to wish them the best of luck in their new positions.

    To mark the 40th anniversary year of the Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), Senator Reed joined with Providence residents, community partners, and energy experts to tour a home in Providence that was made more energy efficient through the program.
