WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after the Judiciary Committee held a hearing today on the sanctuary city policy of New Orleans, LA.

“Louisiana AG Jeff Landry testified powerfully and effectively on behalf of our state. He advocated for the rule of law and against the Holder Justice Department conspiring with Mayor Landrieu to subvert our immigration laws and let illegal immigrants run free. Today’s hearing made it clear that President Obama and New Orleans mayor have a pro-illegal immigration agreement. The Mayor’s own representative at the hearing said, ‘our officers under this policy do not inquire about a person’s immigration status.’

“Louisiana is no stranger to tragedy resulting from illegal immigration. St. John the Baptist Parish Fire Chief Spencer Chauvin lost his life when he was struck by an illegal immigrant driving a bus for which he was not licensed from New Orleans to Baton Rouge.”

Congressman Fleming is a cosponsor of H.R. 3002, the Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act, which would block all federal funding to cities that are out of compliance with reporting requirements to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In addition, Congressman Fleming voted for:

·         The King (R-IA) Amendment to H.R. 2578 to block State and Local Law Enforcement assistance to cities that are not in compliance with ICE reporting requirements, which passed the House on June 3, 2015 by a vote of 227-198.

·         H.R. 3009, the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act, which passed the House of Representatives on July 23, 2015 by a vote of 241-179.

·         The Gosar (R-AZ) Amendment to H.R. 5485, to prohibit federal financial assistance to sanctuary cities, which passed the House on July 7, 2016 by a vote of 236-182.
