Tax Reform

Every year, Americans spend billions of hours preparing their taxes, aided by an army of nearly 1.2 million paid tax preparers. This degree of difficulty is unnecessary and unfair, particularly for individuals and small businesses that are often faced with greater complexity in the filing process and higher rates than their corporate counterparts. In addition, the immoral practice of double taxation affects millions of families every year, and must be stopped.

While over-taxation is one piece of the problem, the flaws in the tax code go far beyond just excessive rates. We must also recognize the outrageous complexity of our Internal Revenue Service code and work to fix it. The uncertainty that stems from this convoluted system prevents businesses from growing and buries individuals in a mountain of paperwork. I am committed to making taxes simple, flat, and fair for everyone. This must be the foundation of our efforts, but it is just the first step.

It is time for Washington to act. I support any effort to limit the massive growth of government that brings with it new and higher taxes, and look forward to working with my colleagues on legislation that will spur job growth, reduce the tax and regulatory burden, and provide an environment of certainty to business and individuals.
