Hudson Votes to Prevent IRS Political Targeting

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) issued the following statement after the House passed legislation to prevent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from targeting groups for their religious and political beliefs:

“From targeting taxpayers for their personal beliefs to rehiring hundreds of untrustworthy former employees, the constant scandals burning at the IRS have created a cloud of mistrust and fear. That’s why we’ve enacted several pieces of bipartisan legislation to rein in the IRS, including making political targeting a firing offense. Today’s bill is another step to protect free speech and ensure the agency’s unthinkable abuses of power like political or religious targeting are never repeated.”

Today, the House passed thePreventing IRS Abuse and Protecting Free Speech Act (H.R. 5053) to eliminate the Schedule B form requirements for non-profit, tax-exempt organizations that require the disclosure of personal donor information. Although federal law prohibits the IRS from releasing Schedule Bs, this information has been exploited to target conservatives. By eliminating the potential for such abuse, this bill strengthens free speech protections.
