Hudson Votes to Combat Human Trafficking

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after voting for a series of bipartisan anti-human trafficking bills, which would increase protection and support for victims of human trafficking and streamline law enforcement resources:

“Human trafficking and sex slavery are worldwide tragedies, and the hard truth is our children and young men and women right here at home are being taken, held against their will and forced into this despicable criminal industry. After hosting a local discussion and working with advocates, I understand that our laws to end this crime need to be updated to match the problem as it stands today.

“This bipartisan legislation will help ensure that our communities, including local law enforcement officials, are equipped with necessary resources to protect the most vulnerable in our society, provide assistance to victims, and apprehend and punish traffickers. I will continue to explore ways to end human trafficking in our communities, assist victims and bring those who perpetuate this crime to justice.”

Last year, Rep. Hudson hosted a Summit on Human Trafficking at the Harris Alumni Center at UNC Charlotte.  This summit focused on ways to reduce human trafficking in our local communities while providing necessary assistance to victims. The summit featured a panel of local activists, including a law enforcement officer, nonprofit groups, a UNC Charlotte professor and a survivor of human trafficking.
