Hudson Responds to Obama’s Veto of Obamacare Repeal

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) released the following statement after President Barack Obama vetoed the first bill successfully passed by both chambers of Congress to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood:

“Obamacare has weakened our economy, lowered the quality of care patients receive, and put bureaucrats between us and our doctors. President Obama had the opportunity to confront his failing health care law today. Unfortunately, his veto signals that he is still not listening to the American people and instead is doubling down on protecting his legacy. We’re going to vote to override this irresponsible veto and continue to work to advance patient-centered health care North Carolinians deserve.”

On Wednesday, Congress passed a bill to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. This is the first Obamacare repeal bill that has been sent to the president’s desk since the law’s enactment in 2010.  Earlier this year, Congress passed a balanced budget agreement which allows for a reconciliation bill to proceed. This is a budget mechanism that can only be used once every year. In the Senate, such a bill is filibuster proof and requires only a simple majority to pass. In December, the bill passed the Senate by a 52-47 vote.
