Hudson Announces 2015 Congressional Art Competition Winner
 
CONCORD, N.C. – U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08) announced Monday at an awards ceremony and reception held at the Cabarrus Art Council that Jazmin Williams, a senior at Mount Pleasant High School, won first place in North Carolina’s Eighth District Congressional Art Competition.
 
“We had an overwhelming amount of beautiful, inspiring artwork submitted by our young artists this year,” said Rep. Hudson. “Our students’ creativity, intelligence and passion can be seen in each piece they created, and I’m proud of them for sharing their God-given talents with our community. I look forward to showing off our district’s artistic talents to visitors and admiring Jazmin’s artwork while it hangs in the U.S. Capitol throughout the next year.”
 
Williams’s piece, titled “Self-Portrait with reflective object,” was selected by an Arts Advisory Committee made up of artists from the district. In addition, Williams was the recipient of the “Fan Favorite” award, which went to the submission with the most “likes” on Facebook.
 
Williams and one guest will have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. to participate in the national ceremony with other winners from congressional districts across the country. Her artwork will also be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol for all to admire.
 
Two students from Concord High School, Meagan Stegall and Emily Nance, won second and third place respectively, in the competition. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Ivy Fyans (Richmond Senior High School), Rachel King (Concord High School), and Abby Wise (Concord First Assembly).
