Dave Joyce Announces Winners of 2016 Congressional Art Competition
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce (OH-14) announced the winners of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition from Ohio’s 14th Congressional District.
“Congratulations to the talented artists who entered the competition. We had a record number of entries and these impressive pieces of work reflect these students’ artistic skill and creativity,” Joyce said. “I look forward to visiting with Hannah and I’m proud that her artwork will be on display for all to see in Washington.”
Hannah’s winning artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year, displayed alongside artwork from winners across the country. She will also be invited to an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in June. Megan's second-place entry will be displayed in Joyce's Washington D.C. office. Alexa’s third-place entry will hang in Joyce's Painesville district office, and Riley’s fourth-place entry will hang in the Twinsburg district office.
A new category in this year’s competition was the People’s Choice Award that was selected on Facebook after receiving the most “likes”. Olivia’s entry will also hang in Joyce’s Painesville district office for a year.
There were 77 entries in this year's Congressional Art Competition from seven different high schools throughout Ohio's 14th Congressional District: Mentor High School, Solon High School, Lake Catholic High School, Mentor Christian School, Twinsburg High School, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School, and Harvey High School.
Joyce also expressed his gratitude to Lakeland Community College, especially Gallery Coordinator Mary Urbas, for organizing the judging and exhibition of the entries.
“Thank you to everyone at Lakeland Community College for hosting our competition and for providing a space for these talented artists to display their work,” Joyce said. “I especially thank Mary Urbas for her work and dedication.”
First started in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition is a way for students in each of the 435 United States Congressional Districts to showcase their artistic abilities.
