Sun News: Mayfield Village's Greenway Trail officially open to the public

The Greenway Trail in Mayfield Village is officially open, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held October 25 to celebrate the village's accomplishment.  Mother Nature cooperated, and over 100 people showed up for the event, including U.S. Representative David Joyce and State Representative Marlene Anielski. Each of the two representatives made remarks, as did Mayor Bruce Rinker.

Held at the trail head, located at 764 SOM Center Road next to the village's fire station, the event kicked off at 11 a.m. The trail runs from Center Elementary School off of Wilson Mills Road to White Road and makes the village more accessible via walking, biking and skating.

Also known as the "Greenway Corridor," the trail is a 2.3-mile addition to the existing eight miles of walking paths in Mayfield Village. The 10-foot-wide paved trail is plenty wide and also accommodates ADA visitors.

Rinker explained establishing trails and greenways equates to multiple benefits, and in large relates to economic renewal and growth.

The village anticipates creation of the trail will lead to increased property values, more tourism, and increased recreational activities, leading to a healthier, more prosperous community.

Among other benefits, Rinker explained greenways protect important habitat and provide corridors for people and wildlife.

Trails and greenways also help improve air and water quality by reducing the need for transportation that leads to CO2 emissions.

Now that the trail is open, the village hopes residents and passers-by will enjoy the trail as a community meeting place.

The Greenway Trail provides a safe walking and biking route from Center School on Wilson Mills Road to Parkview Pool, playgrounds, baseball and soccer fields, the Cuyahoga County Library's new Mayfield Branch, and the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation.

The project was made possible by numerous individuals and entities who generously made property donations, including Progressive Insurance, the Mayfield Board of Education, Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., HD Beta I, LLC, Nacy A. Panzica, the Cuyahoga County Public Library, the Ohio Department of Transportation and SOM Court Development.

The trail was also made possible thanks to support from NOACA's Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative and Transportation Enhancement Program.

The Greenway Corridor master plan and design was developed by URS, while engineering was administered by Stephen Hovancsek & Assoc., Inc.
