Congress Overview

The 15th Congress (1817–1819) dealt with a number of treaties that began drawing the nation’s northern boundaries as they exist today. Congress passed the first national pension for Revolutionary War veterans, and late in the final session, the Missouri Crisis erupted when New York Representative James Tallmadge, Jr., successfully added an anti-slavery amendment to the Missouri statehood bill. The bill foundered when the Senate refused to accept the Tallmadge amendment.
