Jobs and the Economy

Several years after the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the economy has begun to show signs of a full recovery. Since February of 2009, nearly 9 million jobs have been created, with more new jobs in the past two years than any 24-month period since 1999.

The Fourth District has fared better than the country as a whole, with employers adding jobs and new businesses moving to the area. But too many families are still struggling to make ends meet, and we cannot rest until the economy is back at full steam. Our experience in North Carolina has demonstrated that this requires investing in the jobs of the future through education and scientific research and ensuring that workers displaced from traditional industries received the retraining and support they need to transition to new jobs.

I also agree that workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own and are actively searching for new ones should have access to a strong safety net to help them make ends meet until they're back on their feet. In Congress, I have strongly supported the Obama Administration's efforts to expand federal unemployment compensation to supplement benefits provided by the states.

As your Representative, I will continue to fight for expanding economic opportunity; continued investment in education, research, and infrastructure that promotes job creation and growth.
