Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our congressional district.
I am pleased to announce the participation of Florida's 18th Congressional District in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition, which provides Members of Congress with the unique opportunity to showcase the talents of creative high school students in their district. The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in Florida's 18th District, and the winner's work will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol along with the artwork from other contest winners nationwide.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
Please click here for the necessary documents for participation in the 2016 Congressional Art Competition. The completed application and artwork must be submitted to the student's attending high school no later than Monday, April 25, 2016.
Art works entered in the contest may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth. Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may include:
- Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
- Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
- Collages - must be two dimensional
- Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
- Mixed Media -- use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
- Computer Generated Art
- Photography
The winner will be chosen by the highest number of “likes” via Congressman Murphy's official Facebook page. The voting period on Facebook will begin on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 12 p.m. thru Monday, May 2, 2016 at 12 p.m. The applicant with the highest number of “likes” by Monday, May 2, 2016 at 12 p.m. will be declared the winner of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for Florida’s 18th Congressional District.
