Brown Announces $1.5 Million Federal Investment in Washington County's Economic Development

Infrastructure Project Will Make Washington County More Business-Friendly, is Expected to Create up to 255 New Jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded the City of Belpre $1,558,850 through the Administration’s Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative. In partnership with the Buckeye Hills-Hocking Valley Regional Development District, Belpre will use this funding to extend sewer services along Ohio Route 7 to serve large employers and businesses in the area. The completed project is expected to create up to 255 new jobs and to help retain existing jobs. It will also leverage more than $3 million in new private investments.

“Water and sewer improvements help attract jobs and businesses to the region but it can often be difficult for communities to fully fund these projects,” said Brown. “This federal investment will help the City of Belpre complete this important infrastructure project, making the area more competitive, bringing in up to 255 jobs, and boosting the local economy.”

The POWER Initiative is an inter-agency effort to strengthen communities impacted by the changing coal economy.
