September 28, 2016
Press Release

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Charles B. Rangel, who represents the 13th Congressional District of New York that includes Upper Manhattan and parts of the Bronx, released the following statement in response to the passing of Israeli statesman and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres:

“I send my thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of Shimon Peres, one of the world’s most courageous and respected leaders. Shimon Peres played a critical role in the development of modern Israel.  He maintained a lifelong commitment to public service and to the pursuit of justice and peace.

Shortly before his presidency ended, I was proud to join my colleagues in presenting him the Congressional Gold Medal for his honorable service to Israel, during which he significantly contributed to the strong bond between our two nations. Israel continues to remain America’s great ally and partner as a global leader.

I am honored to represent a Congressional District that has always enjoyed friendship with Israel and the Jewish community. We thank Shimon Peres for his tireless fight for freedom, not only for the Jewish people, but for all people. Shimon Peres left a lasting legacy and his spirit, and the spirit of Israel’s founders will continue to endure.”
