If you’ve ever wanted to obtain first-hand experience with the community responsibilities and legislative duties of a member of Congress, then an internship in the office of Congresswoman Slaughter may be the perfect experience for you. Interning in a congressional office will provide you with unparalleled knowledge and understanding of how public policy and legislation are developed. Congressional internships are offered in her Washington and Rochester offices.
Washington, D.C.
In the Washington, D.C. office, internships run throughout the fall, spring, or summer semesters for college students and recent college graduates. First-hand experience interning in Congresswoman Slaughter’s provides a unique opportunity to understand the development and implementation of public policy. Intern responsibilities include drafting letters to constituents, attending committee hearings, writing summary briefs, researching various issues for the legislative staff and assisting with additional office duties.

Rochester:
In the Rochester, N.Y. office, internships run throughout the fall, spring, and summer semesters for college students and recent college graduates. Highly qualified high school students will occasionally be considered. Priority is given to residents of New York’s 25th Congressional District, though all interested students are encouraged to apply. Interns in Congresswoman Slaughter’s district office will gain an understanding of the constituent services she provides for the residents of her district.

Congresswoman Slaughter understands that higher education has never been more expensive and that this places a large financial burden on many students and their families. To qualify for federal loans, it is very important that you submit your financial aid application as soon as possible. Federal Student Aid is awarded on an as needed basis, and those who apply first have the best chance of securing financial assistance.

Admission to one of our nation’s military academies, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, is highly competitive. Individuals nominated from the 25th Congressional District must meet the high standards set by each academy. While it is a difficult process, the rewards for those individuals that qualify are great.
Each candidate will meet with Congresswoman Slaughter’s Academy Selection Committee members. The committee will conduct personal interviews with applicants at the Rochester office in December. Information on the exact time is provided in November.
The method for selecting nominees is competitive and Congresswoman Slaughter can submit up to ten nominees for each vacancy at each academy. The candidates are then ranked by each academy’s admissions office in order of merit in accordance with the specific academy’s system. The most highly qualified candidate is then offered admission to fill the vacancy.
Nomination Procedure
To begin your academy nomination application, please complete the application form and return it to our Rochester office. In order to complete your file in time for consideration, you will need to submit the following items by October 24:
- Copy of your high school transcript, including the first term of your senior year, when available
- Two letters of recommendation. One of these must be from a principal, dean, teacher, or guidance counselor at your high school or college.

Please check off each item as it is submitted to the Rochester office. After personal interviews are completed, all applicants will be notified whether they have been selected for a nomination no later than January 31. Nominees will learn directly from the academies if they have been awarded appointments.

Congressional Arts Competition
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent each congressional district. Since the competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in this creative competition.
All high school students in the 25th Congressional District are eligible to compete. All artwork must be display ready and received at the MAG’s Creative Workshop at 500 University Avenue, Rochester, N.Y. 14607, by 5:00 p.m. on April 22nd. The Creative Workshop’s hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Please contact Rachael Baldanza with any questions regarding dropping off artwork at (585) 276-8959.

This new competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Established in 2013, this competition is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software apps for mobile, tablet, or desktops.
Throughout the competition period, participating students are provided opportunities to engage with various STEM educational partners located throughout Monroe County. Congresswoman Slaughter is committed to ensuring that creative ideas from the best and brightest in Monroe County receive the attention they deserve.
Over 50 students participated in Congresswoman Slaughter’s challenge in 2014. All apps were evaluated by district judges, area experts in game design, academics, and electronics. The winning app was “Final Buster,” which is a quiz app to help high school students study for math tests. This innovative app blocks users from accessing other apps while studying, forcing them to focus on completing the mathematical problems on Final Buster.
