Westmoreland on Nuclear Agreement with Iran – One Year Later

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the one-year anniversary week of President Obama’s dangerous nuclear deal with Iran, the U.S. House of Representatives passed three bills imposing new sanctions on Iran. Representative Lynn Westmoreland, who has voiced his strong opposition to the Obama Administration negotiating with Iran from the start, voted in favor of each piece of legislation, and issued the following response:

“Here we are a year later and I’m still looking for an answer to my question: ‘What is good about the Iran Nuclear Deal?’ History has shown that Iran cannot be trusted and- to no one’s surprise- reports say that Iran may have already violated their end of the deal. I have said it time and again: President Obama and his administration should not be negotiating with a state that supports terrorism and has funded groups that actively attack Americans and the western way of life.”

This week, the House passed three bills that will block the administration from directly contributing to Iran’s nuclear agenda:
  • H.R. 5631, Iran Accountability Act of 2016
    • This bill holds Iran responsible for its ballistic missile program, support for international terrorism, and ongoing record of human rights abuses.
  • H.R. 4992, United States Financial System Protection Act of 2016
    • This bill prohibits the Administration from allowing the U.S. dollar to be used in trade with Iran.
  • H.R. 5119, No 2H2O from Iran Act
    • This bill prevents the administration from purchasing heavy water from Iran, a chemical that is essential to the production of nuclear weapons.
“On top of his dangerous nuclear agreement, the Obama Administration now wants to give Iran access to the U.S. dollar that could potentially be used to fund their nuclear program. To prevent more ‘extreme carelessness’ from this Administration, I joined my colleagues in demanding that not one cent of tax payer dollars go to Iran.”
