On December 17, 2015, Congressman Todd Young introduced H.Res. 571, legislation to establish the Select Committee on Oversight of the Iran Nuclear Deal. The creation of this committee is a response to the bipartisan concern surrounding the United States’ nuclear deal with Iran, the world’s largest state sponsor of terror. Though opposed to the deal itself, along with a bipartisan majority of the United States Congress, Rep. Young has stated that the “one threat more dangerous than President Obama’s Iranian nuclear deal would be failing to meaningfully enforce restrictions to Iran’s nuclear weapons program once the deal is in place.” The bipartisan select committee would be charged with holding the Iranian regime accountable to the terms of the deal, as well as ensuring that the nation is properly informed about breaches in the agreement should Iran cheat on the deal.

Serving as a clearinghouse for disparate information—gathered across committee jurisdictions—is one of the unique benefits of a congressional select committee charged with overseeing the implementation and execution of the Iran Nuclear Deal. As concern around President Obama’s legacy nuclear deal mounts, a specialized select committee tasked with connecting wide-ranging data points and providing comprehensive oversight can meaningfully improve the short and long-term security situation for the United States and our allies in the Middle East.
