Hoosier Veteran Voices

The Veterans History Project (VHP) of the Library of Congress American Folk Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.  These stories are told through personal narratives, correspondence, and visual material, all of which the Library of Congress would like to help preserve.

As a former Marine Corps Captain, Congressman Todd Young understands the importance of our military, including honoring the sacrifices of our veterans. To help promote the Veterans History Project and preserve the rich history of Indiana’s 9th district veterans, Congressman Young has set up a district wide initiative to record wartime stories of our veterans. At all of the constituent service centers, his staff is now conducting recorded interviews, which are then sent to the Library of Congress to be placed in their digital catalogs.

Who Can Participate

Veterans who served in the United States military, in any capacity from World War I and after, and are no longer serving are eligible to participate.  In recognition that wars are fought on many fronts, the Library of Congress encourages members from every branch and rank, as well as civilians who served in support of the U.S. war effort, to submit their stories to the record.  All of these narratives are valuable to the preservation of our history.

Get Involved

If you, or a veteran you know, would like your unique story sent to the Library of Congress, please contact the Jeffersonville Constituent Service Center at 812-288-3999. Recording devices and interviewers are on hand at any of the offices below. On account of staffing limitations, interviews must be scheduled in advance, and cannot be done on a “walk-in” basis. And please inquire if you or your organization would like to get involved with VHP on a larger scale.
