2016 Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide annual art competition that allows high school students from all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories to showcase their artistic ability.  This year’s competition is open to all high school students, but my office will only accept entries from students who are legal residents of the 9th Congressional District of Indiana.

Exceptions will be made for schools who have 7th through 12th grades on one campus. To look up your Congressional District, please visit: http://www.house.gov or call my office at (202) 225-5315.

The winning artwork will hang in the United States Capitol for one entire year in an exhibition and cannot be returned to the students earlier. Students should, therefore, submit artwork they will not need for other purposes.

Competition guidelines and a Student Information/Release Form can be found online at http://1.usa.gov/1QESvrR and http://1.usa.gov/1VH7dzW.

Please ensure that all entries are submitted with a Student Information/Release Form. All entries must meet the following criteria:

  • Be two-dimensional
  • Be no larger than 28 inches wide by 28 inches tall by 4 inches thick
  • Not weigh more than 15 pounds
  • Be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. Copyright law.

All artwork, including a completed Student Information/Release Form, must be received on or before Friday, April 15th, 2016. Late entries will not be accepted.

Artwork may be delivered to:

Entries will be scored by a panel of professional artists from Indiana's 9th District.  Judges will be asked to score and select a winner in each of the following categories: Photography and Non-Photography. Judges will then be asked to select one of the pieces to be named the overall Best in Show.

The artist selected for Best In Show will be publicly announced at a reception and art exhibition showcasing this year's artists.

The winning artist will also be flown to Washington D.C. to attend National Art Competition Reception for all Congressional District Winners in June. The Best in Show winner will have his or her artwork displayed in the tunnel to the nation's capital for one year. The runner-up will have her or his artwork displayed in the Jeffersonville District office for one year.

Additionally, a social media runner-up will be selected through votes on Young’s Facebook page at http://facebook.com/RepToddYoung. The artist whose work receives the most “Likes” on Facebook will receive a special recognition from the Congressman.  Their work will also be displayed in the Bloomington Constituent Service Center for one year.
