Vitter Announces $25M Grant for Flood Relief Projects

(Metairie, La.) – U.S. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) today announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will award a $25,887,262 grant that will be distributed among St. Mary, Livingston, and East Baton Rouge Parishes for a wide range of recovery projects, some of which were related to the historic August floods that devastated much of Southern Louisiana.

“This grant will help rebuild our schools and levees and also remove debris from our streets, all of which is vital for Louisianians to regain a sense of normalcy after a tough year that included a 1000-year flooding event that devastated so much of South Louisiana,” Vitter said. “We face a long road toward full recovery, but I am committed to keep pushing and working to ensure our communities are able to rebuild and be made whole.”

The St. Mary Parish Levee District will receive $3,522,954 for its actions to increase public health and safety during flooding that occurred between December 28, 2015 and February 1, 2016. The Livingston Parish School Board will receive $17,550,000 in federal funding for increased emergency safeguards to 18 of its facilities. Central City in East Baton Rouge Parish will be awarded $4,814,307 for citywide debris removal.

Vitter has been working to secure additional federal funds to Louisiana after the unexpected floods overwhelmed many Louisiana communities in August. He voted to bring nearly $440 million in relief funds as part of the continuing resolution in September.
