Congressman John Kline is reminding students who are seeking nomination into U.S. Service Academies that the deadline for applying through his congressional office is Friday, Oct. 7.

“As a Marine now serving on the House Armed Services Committee, I appreciate the role our service academies play in training our next generation of leaders for our Armed Forces,” Kline said. “If you know a student interested in attending one of our nation’s prestigious service academies in 2017, please share this important information with them: the deadline for applying for a nomination is Friday, Oct. 7.”

To apply for the class entering the Academies in 2017, students must submit the following to Congressman Kline’s office no later than Oct. 7:

  • A completed application for nomination, including a recent photograph; high school transcripts;
  • Three letters of recommendation by individuals who are very familiar with the applicant, who may include: teachers, clergy, coaches, employers, veterans, neighbors, or other non-family members who could accurately comment on an applicant’s character, abilities, motivation, and potential;
  • SAT and/or ACT scores. These are acceptable from the high school transcripts, or this form completed by a guidance counselor; and
  • A typewritten essay explaining the applicant’s motivation for attending a service academy. It should be no more than two pages, double-spaced.

All materials should be mailed or submitted to Service Academy Coordinator c/o Congressman John Kline, 350 West Burnsville Parkway, Suite #135, Burnsville, MN 55337

In January, Kline nominated 21 students from around Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District to U.S. Service Academies for the class of 2020. Because he is retiring from Congress at the end of this year, Kline’s nomination process for the service academies’ class of 2021 is earlier this year. In 14 years of Congress, Kline has nominated more than 300 students to U.S. Service Academies.
