Securing Freedom

In a time of uncertainty and instability throughout many regions of the globe, we must allocate our material and budget resources carefully. One of my top priorities in Congress is ensuring the men and women of the armed forces receive the best equipment, weapons systems, and training so they can accomplish their mission. We must maintain a strong commitment to the brave men and women in uniform who defend our nation as they courageously battle a determined enemy.

Minnesotans are tightening their belts and continuing to do more with less, and they are demanding Washington do the same. The Pentagon is not immune from that expectation; Washington must continue to make the tough choices required to provide the equipment, resources, and support our military personnel need to do their jobs as effectively as possible while wisely stewarding taxpayer resources.

As a retired Marine, husband of a career Army nurse, and father of a son who has served three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, I take seriously my congressional responsibility to provide our troops, veterans, and their families the unwavering support they deserve. Initiatives I have championed on behalf of veterans serve as clear examples of what Washington can do when cameras are turned off, sleeves are rolled up, and petty political differences are put aside.

As a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am a champion of a strong national defense, our sons and daughters in uniform and their families, and returning fiscal discipline to the Pentagon. I join my colleagues in fighting to strengthen our military and invest in a force postured to meet the challenges of the 21st century, while working to provide the necessary resources for our troops.
