As a career Marine Corps Officer now serving on the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman John Kline appreciates the difficulties and complexities of the service academy application process. Members of his staff will make every effort to help interested students and their families understand the process of pursuing a nomination.
Congressman Kline accepts applications for nomination to the following service academies:

Note: Application for admission to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is only granted by application directly to the Coast Guard Academy.
Method of Nomination and Eligibility
The regulations of the Air Force, Army, and Naval Academies require that a nominee reside in the congressional district of the nominating congressman. As the representative of Minnesota’s Second Congressional District, Congressman Kline can only assist students whose parents’ legal voting address is in the Second district (Do you live in the Second District?). As required by the service academies, nominees must be permanent residents of Minnesota and United States citizens. Candidates must be not older than 22 years of age, and cannot be or have ever been, married and must not have dependents. If an applicant has a parent who is an active of retired military serviceman, or a parent who is a disabled or deceased veteran, he/she should review the instructions in the service academy literature to learn of additional means of receiving a nomination. Application Process The application process for an academy nomination is challenging. Students are encouraged to begin the process during the spring of the junior year in high school.
To apply for the class entering the Academies in 2017, the following materials must be submitted to the address listed below, no later than Friday, October 7, 2016.
Service Academy interviews will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016.
1) A completed Application for Nomination, including a recent photograph.
2) High school transcripts.
3) Three letters of recommendation by individuals who are very familiar with the applicant, who may include: teachers, clergy, coaches, employers, veterans, neighbors, or other non-family members who could accurately comment on an applicant's character, abilities, motivation, and potential.
4) SAT and/or ACT scores. These are acceptable from the high school transcripts, or this form completed by a guidance counselor.
5) A typewritten essay explaining the applicant’s motivation for attending a service academy. It should be no more than two pages, double-spaced. Please mail all materials to: Service Academy Coordinator c/o Congressman John Kline 350 West Burnsville Parkway, Suite #135 Burnsville, MN 55337
Pre-Candidate Questionaire
Interested students should contact the admissions office at the service academies directly to request a pre-candidate questionnaire. Upon completion and return of the pre-candidate form for each school, students will be informed of specific application requirements.
Academy Advisory Committee
Members of Congressman Kline’s staff will review completed applications for nomination. Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Congressman Kline’s Academy Advisory Committee.
The Academy Advisory Committee is a group of volunteer Minnesota advisors with military backgrounds, who are chosen by Congressman Kline to interview and evaluate potential candidates. The Committee makes recommendations to Congressman Kline, who then selects the candidates for nomination.
