Defense

A weak national defense is more often an invitation to confrontation than an overture of peace. Providing for U.S. national security and protecting our men and women in uniform will continue to be my number one priority in Congress -- because a strong defense is a strong America.

Chairman of the House Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee. As Chairman, I work to provide our military with the cutting-edge capabilities they need to defeat any adversaries and protect American citizens and interests.

Strengthen national security. Our national defense is not a faucet that can be turned off and on. We must be rebuilding our military, resourcing our servicemembers, and creating long-term innovative strategies for countering any threats to U.S. national security.

Pay our troops. Washington needs to get its fiscal house in order, but we can’t balance the budget on the backs of our troops. That’s why I support pay raises for our servicemembers and am fighting to protect their compensation and benefits. I’ve introduced legislation to protect our military members, DOD civilians, and their families in the case of any future government shutdowns (Read H.R. 3616).

Support military families. The heroes behind our heroes sacrifice so much. The least we can do is:
  • Protect their access to commissaries and other benefits.
  • Help make it easier for military spouses to transition between jobs.
  • Protect the benefits of military spouses who have lost a loved one in the line of duty (Read H.R. 1594).

Protect veterans. They didn’t wait to answer the call of duty; they shouldn’t have to wait for timely medical care. I’m working to cut down on the claims backlog, hold the VA responsible, and ensure our heroes get the support and care they deserve. Read about my work.

Fighting for Virginia’s military installations and industrial base. Virginia has a proud tradition of supporting our country’s national security. Installations like Fort Lee, the Army’s principal logistics base; Naval Station Norfolk; Norfolk Naval Shipyard have played crucial roles in our nation’s defense throughout our history, and it is a privilege to champion these critical resources and the defense industrial base that supports them.

Keep terrorists off American soil. The Administration’s efforts to transfer GTMO detainees to the U.S. need to be stopped, Guantanamo must be kept open and terrorists must not be allowed to transfer to countries where they can easily return to the battlefield.

I am humbled to have received the highest civilian honors from both the U.S. Army and the US Navy for serving our men and women in uniform.

Founder of the Modeling and Simulation Caucus to work to expand the industry that has increased training and readiness capabilities for our military.
