Below you will find resources made available by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to taxpayers for common tax related questions:

TAX FORMS:

Nearly all IRS tax forms and instructions are available online for download.  For a complete listing, please visit the IRS Forms & Publications home page.  Need a paper copy of your tax form?  Please visit the Forms and Publications by U.S. Mail page to order your forms for free through the mail.

HEALTH INSURANCE:

Under the Affordable Care Act, taxpayers will be required to report their health coverage on their tax return.  The majority of taxpayers will simply check a box on their return indicating that they had qualifying health coverage.  More information about the Affordable Care Act tax provisions can be found here.

FILING ASSISTANCE:

The IRS offers free preparation assistance to low-income, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers.  For more information about this service and to find assistance in your area, please click here.

A list of Taxpayer Assistance Centers in Virginia can be found by clicking here.

TRACKING MY REFUND:

File your tax return but haven’t received your refund?  Use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool to check on the status.  Refunds are generally issued within 21 days after the IRS has received your tax return.

BEWARE OF SCAMS:

Unfortunately, many taxpayers are targeted by individuals that pose as IRS employees attempting to scam consumers illegally.  For more information about this pervasive telephone scam, including what to do if you believe you have been targeted, please visit information pages from the IRS and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

TAX-RELATED IDENTITY THEFT

Tax-identity theft typically happens when a scammer files a forged tax return using a taxpayer’s Social Security number to claim a refund. When the real taxpayer attempts to file his or her return, the victim receives a message that a return has already been filed and a fraudulent refund claimed in their name – which can lead to significant delays before the real taxpayer is able to clear up the problem and claim the refund to which they are entitled.

Helpful information on protecting your identity, recognizing the warning signs of identity theft, and steps to take if you are a victim of tax- related identity theft is available on the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website here. The Virginia Attorney General’s website also has useful resources and guidance for victims of identity theft available here.
