Washington, DC, June 16, 2011 | comments

CLINTON, N.C. (AP) -- Less than a week remains to register for disaster assistance because of losses from the tornados that struck North Carolina April 16.

The Sampson Independent reported Thursday that June 20 is the deadline for eligible homeowners, renters and businesses in 19 disaster-declared counties to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

About $15 million in federal and state grants and loans have been distributed in North Carolina so far.

FEMA officials say 9,000 people have registered for assistance.

Monday is also the deadline to submit disaster loan applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Federal officials say the SBA loans are available to homeowners and renters, as well as to businesses and private nonprofit organizations.

Registering with FEMA can be done online at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
