WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than 50 million seniors, about a quarter of the nation’s adult population, qualify for the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program every year. The program offers free tax assistance to individuals who are at least 60 years of age. This is a vital resource for America’s lower-income taxpaying seniors, who often cannot afford professional accounting services. Last night, Congressman Alan Grayson (D-FL09) passed an amendment to the Financial Services Bill of 2017 (H.R. 5485), dramatically increasing the funding for this program.

“Every one of us is a senior, or hopes to be one someday,” said Rep. Grayson. “This program follows the ancient precept to honor our fathers and mothers.”

The Tax Counseling Program reimburses volunteers for out-of-pocket expenses, including transportation and meals provided and rewards tax assistance locations. The money leverages volunteer help for those who assist elderly taxpayers.

Grayson’s amendment increases the minimum funding level for the program by 50 percent, to $3.2 million.

Congressman Alan Grayson represents Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, as well as parts of Orange and Polk counties.
