Grayson-Improved Weather Forecasting Bill Passes House of Representatives

Legislation Includes Hurricane Forecasting Improvement Program

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – A weather forecasting bill amended by Congressman Alan Grayson (FL-09) passed the U.S. House of Representatives last night. Grayson amended H.R. 2413 the ‘Weather Forecasting Improvement Act of 2014’ during a Science, Space, and Technology Environment Subcommittee mark-up to include a program focused on improving hurricane forecasting. In its final form, H.R. 2413 establishes a research program within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to “develop and extend accurate hurricane forecasts and warnings in order to reduce loss of life, injury, and damage to the economy.”

Grayson emphasized the significance of increased accuracy in forecasting hurricanes, particularly in coastal states such as Florida. “We need each and every person in hurricane-prone communities to trust the accuracy of storm warnings,” he said. “Inaccurate forecasts are dangerous not only when they fail to warn people of approaching hurricanes –over time, they can also lead to public disregard for hurricane warnings. By the time that a hurricane or tornado actually arrives, it can be too late for the public to prepare for it. Greater precision in forecasting will help us reduce fatalities, injuries, and the economic damage caused by hurricanes.”

The Environment Subcommittee’s Ranking Member, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) commended Grayson’s efforts on the House Floor prior to the bill’s passage yesterday. “Mr. Grayson added a valuable amendment for a focused hurricane research program,” said Bonamici.

The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st.

Congressman Alan Grayson represents Florida’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, as well as parts of Orange and Polk counties. He previously served as the U.S. Representative for Florida's 8th Congressional District in the 111th Congress.
