Commemorating the life of Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson

On March 13th, Maryland’s 4th Congressional District suffered the loss of one of our heroes. Prince George’s County Police Officer First Class Jacai Colson was killed in the line of duty outside of the District III Police Station in Landover. While Officer Colson’s death is an absolute tragedy, it is also a reminder of the tremendous commitment our police officers exhibit when it comes to serving our local communities.

I want to preserve Officer Colson’s legacy so that his ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten. As part of that, I delivered a speech on the floor of the United States House of Representatives to honor Officer Colson’s public service.

You can watch the entire statement below:

There is no doubt that people as remarkable as Officer Colson often come from a community of people equally as remarkable. On behalf of the residents of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District, I sent Officer Colson’s parents – James & Sheila Colson – a letter of condolence expressing our gratitude for their son’s service. I also wrote to Prince George’s County Police Chief Henry Stawinski, reaffirming my unwavering appreciation and support for the work our officers conduct daily to keep the residents of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District safe.

The impact of Officer Colson’s work was evident in the thousands attending his Memorial Service on March 25th at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro to pay their respects. Thank you for your service, Officer Colson. You will not be forgotten.

Supporting my colleagues and Leader Pelosi on the House East Front Steps of the Capitol to mark the 6th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act.

Since being signed into law in 2010, the Affordable Care Act has dramatically improved the lives of countless Americans by making healthcare both more affordable and more accessible. For these reasons, I have been an ardent supporter of the Affordable Care Act, unanimously voting in its favor throughout my time in Congress.

That is why, on March 23rd, I proudly joined the Democratic Party Leadership and other fellow colleagues on the House East Front Steps of the United States Capitol to celebrate the 6th Anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act. Because of its universal respect for the health and betterment of all people of the United States, especially for women and those who would otherwise not have access to health services, the passing of the Affordable Care Act was undoubtedly a defining moment for our generation worthy of recognition.

The success of the Affordable Care Act over the past six years not only speaks to our nation’s consciousness for the well-being of one another, but also to our unwavering commitment to progress. As we move forward and evolve as a nation, I pledge my continued support of the Affordable Care Act which I know has so profoundly benefited people across our nation and specifically here in the 4th District.

Hosted Roundtable on Environmental Challenges and the Impact on Maryland Communities

Thanking students from Annapolis High School for attending my roundtable discussion on Maryland’s Environment in Arnold, MD.

Maryland is undergoing significant environmental changes that affect the public health of our citizens. From the restoration of Poplar Island to the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster population and Anacostia River Restoration project, as a Member of Congress I’ve fought to protect Maryland’s environmental future. Yet the fight for Maryland’s environment extends beyond the halls of Congress into our communities.

That’s why I hosted a roundtable discussion titled Environmental Challenges and the Impact on Maryland Communities to discuss Maryland’s environmental needs and how to fuse the expertise of federal scientists, community members, academics, and policy experts to create environmental solutions. During our roundtable, we covered global warming and climate change, growing environmental concerns, ongoing environmental justice issues, public and private sector challenges, solutions, and successes.

Hosted Roundtable on Women’s Health: A Conversation about the Challenges & Opportunities to Reduce Health Disparities for Women and Girls of Color

Listening to a panel of health experts at my roundtable on women’s health in Largo, MD.

In acknowledgement of Women’s History Month and the 6th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, I hosted a roundtable in District 4 on Women’s Health: A Conversation about the Challenges & Opportunities to Reduce Health Disparities for Women and Girls of Color. Twenty-five health practitioners, academics, and community members were present discussing heart health, obesity, diabetes, cancer, domestic violence, sexual assault, maternal and infant health, and mental health.

Sadaf Ahmad, Public Policy and Advocacy Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association’s National Capital Area Chapter, served as a panelist in Friday’s discussion. Ms. Ahmad noted the impact of caregiving on women’s health and stated that “caregiving responsibilities take a toll on women's health and well-being. Because of caregiving duties, women are more likely to experience adverse consequences in the workplace.”

In reflection on Friday’s discussion, Eusi Holt, Operations Manager at BETAH Associates echoed my own remarks. Ms. Holt added, “Friday's discussion was robust, thought provoking, and necessary. The ability to access information is critical to improving health outcomes for women. As we work to eliminate health disparities and improve access to information for all, we must develop messages and interventions that span the socioeconomic spectrum.” It is clear that women’s health is connected to the overall community’s health. There are a number of gaps we have not yet filled, and there is a need for flexibility in education and integrated health care for families that cuts across race, gender, and socio-economics.

Thank you to all who attended my March events! Looking forward to seeing you soon!
