ATTN: Internal Memo for Members of Congress
Posted by Randy | May 24, 2016

Friend –

Yesterday, I led a group of Democrat and Republican lawmakers down to Naval Station Norfolk to hear firsthand from some of our Navy warfighters – the men who command our ships and our aircraft every day – about the challenges they face equipping, resourcing, and training our fleet. This Thursday, the House Armed Services Seapower and Readiness Subcommittees will be holding a joint hearing to get this critical message to as many lawmakers in Washington as possible.

Here is the internal memo that we’re sharing with Members of Congress about the issues we saw and heard about on Monday – added a few of my own notes for you to see. Our best chance to bring our servicemembers home safely is to send them off prepared.

You can read the full memo with my notes here.

Yours in service,

Randy

Since Randy never served, I wanted to take a moment to give him the perspective of one who has. Back when I was winning the Cold War in the submarine service and Randy was lawyering, we were never happier than when a politician would drop in to visit us as we prepared for a long and difficult deployment to blunt the Soviet ballistic missile submarine threat. Rather than squandering our time to ensure all of the reactor instrumentation and control systems were in top condition for the months of non-stop operation that lay ahead, we would take time to polish the ship to a gleam and then entertain our honored guests. Later in the evening, after our guests departed, we were given an opportunity to perform the maintenance we hadn't completed during "visitor" day, which was so much more fun than spending time with our families with whom we would have no contact during the coming three or more months while we were submerged beneath the ocean countering the moves of our Soviet counterparts. As the engineering department of USS Eisenhower prepares for their lengthy department, I'm certain that they were just as thrilled to host Randy for his very important hearing and honored that he took time from his busy 2nd district race to spend time with them. It's not like they had anything more important to do. As Randy is a modest man, I'm sure he will take down my laudatory comments shortly after I've posted them as he has to all of my praise for him. Prove me wrong, Randy.
