Judiciary & Crime

Our country was built on the rule of law. That means the law governs every American alike – whether it’s your neighbor or the President of the United States. I strongly believe restoring the rule of law is one of the most important issues facing our nation, which is why I’m working to rein in executive overreach, aggressively limit government, and ensure the Administration is enforcing our laws.

Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Member of the Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security Investigations Subcommittee, and the Intellectual Property and the Internet Subcommittee.

The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land
. As a Member of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, fighting to protect Americans’ constitutionally protected freedoms is a duty I take seriously.

Security must not come at the cost of liberty. We must improve oversight and accountability of the intelligence community in order to meet the twin goals of protecting Americans’ civil liberties and ensuring national security (Read H.R. 2048).

Keep internet access tax-free. Permanently ensure that citizens cannot be taxed by state and local governments for Internet access (Read H.R. 235).

Stop the release of criminal aliens. In Fiscal Year 2014 alone, the Administration released over 30,000 criminal aliens, according to information provided to the House Judiciary Committee.
  • That’s why I’ve pushed back on the heads of the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) about the release of criminal aliens from detention centers that have been convicted of aggravated felonies and were members of violent criminal gangs.
  • I support a bill that requires the FBI to publish crime statistics of illegal immigrants. (Read H.R. 3151).

Reform the patent system. We must foster a healthy intellectual property system that both encourages entrepreneurs to innovate, and protects small businesses by discouraging abusive litigation practices. (Read H.R. 9).

Protect our communities from crime.

  • We need to empower state and local law enforcement to go after hackers and cyber criminals (Read H.R. 3490).
  • I supported establishing a Blue Alert system throughout the U.S. to help speed the apprehension of violent criminals who kill or seriously injure law enforcement officers (Read S. 665).

Combat hackers who target credit card information. I support legislation to make sure that dealers of stolen American credit card numbers are subject to prosecution regardless of where they may be located (Read H.R. 1584).

Reform civil forfeiture laws. I’m working to make it harder for the IRS and the Department of Justice to seize property without a criminal charge or conviction (Read H.R. 540).

Stop child exploitation and human trafficking. We need to equip investigators with the tools they need to prevent these crimes, focus on solutions to stem the demand for trafficking and spot victims before they get trafficked into the U.S., and bring perpetrators to swift justice (Read H.R. 357 and H.R. 181).

Co-Chairman of the bi-partisan Congressional Trademark Caucus to increase Congressional awareness of counterfeit products and the risks associated to businesses that have their intellectual property stolen.
